Further improvements are coming for international student visa applications, following their move to Immigration New Zealand’s enhanced Immigration Online system.

In August 2025, we launched our redesigned student visa application process to make it more efficient for everyone.

The new dynamic application form means you only need to answer questions relevant to your client’s situation. The form includes guidance and easy access to information to help our customers answer the questions accurately.

The transition of student visas to enhanced Immigration Online has been relatively smooth, thanks to regular engagement with our Student Focus Group, education providers, immigration professionals and others.

Stakeholder insight, both positive and negative, helps us understand how the new platform and student visa processing is performing and make improvements.

Upcoming improvements

From 8 December 2025, these changes will be made to enhanced Immigration Online:

  • Students returning to the same provider for the same programme will no longer need to answer questions about their post-study intentions or their reasons for choosing the provider and programme

  • New guidance will help students avoid applying for Pathway or English Language student visas when a different visa category is more appropriate

  • Tertiary providers will no longer need to provide applicants with letters confirming foreign government tuition fee payments

  • A problem preventing 19-year-olds from applying for visas to attend New Zealand schools will be fixed

  • Updated guidance on Indian education loans will help students know which financial documents to upload when using an Indian public sector bank loan, based on the information on our website.
