Imagine this: You’ve built a life in New Zealand - career, friends & family, but your parents are still thousands of kilometres away. Text messages & video calls help, but nothing compares to having them here in person for the big milestones (as well as the little everyday moments too).

Now, Immigration New Zealand (INZ) has announced something that could change everything. On 29 September 2025, INZ will open applications for the new Parent Boost Visitor Visa. This visa will allow parents of New Zealand citizens & residents to stay longer & visit more flexibly than before.

What Is the Parent Boost Visitor Visa?

The Parent Boost Visitor Visa is a new visa category designed for parents of adult New Zealand citizens or residents. Unlike the standard visitor visa, this one gives families more time together by allowing longer & repeated visits.

Here are the key details announced by INZ:

  • Applications open: 29 September 2025

  • Visa length: Valid for up to 5 years, with the ability to obtain a further visa for an additional 5 years

  • Stay duration per visit: Each 5-year visa allows up to 3 years multiple-entry, then the balance of 2 years multiple-entry after completing a "compliance check" offshore

  • Who it’s for: Parents of an adult New Zealand citizen or resident

This is not a pathway to residence, but it is a practical option for families who want to strengthen bonds without navigating the complexities of residence visas.

Comparison: Parent Boost Visitor Visa vs Parent & Grandparent Visitor Visa

Many families already know about the Parent & Grandparent Visitor Visa (PGVV). So, how does the new Parent Boost Visitor Visa compare?

👉 Key takeaway: The Parent Boost Visitor Visa is far more generous with stay lengths, compared to the PGVV’s maximum of 6 months per visit (with a strict 18-month cap). For many families, this is the biggest difference—it means less disruption, fewer goodbyes, and more meaningful time together.

Key Requirements

You need to meet 1 of the following financial requirements:

  1. The sponsor’s income

    1. A single sponsor must earn at least the median wage to support 1 parent.

    2. The combined income of joint sponsors must be at least 1.5x the median wage to support 1 parent (currently NZD $104,707.20).

    3. For each additional parent, the required income increases by 0.5x the median wage (an additional NZD $34,902.40 for each parent).

  2. The parent(s) ongoing income

    1. A single parent must have a regular income that aligns with the single rate of New Zealand Superannuation, which is currently NZD $32,611.28 a year before tax.

    2. A couple must have a combined income that matches the couple rate of New Zealand Superannuation, which is currently NZD $49,552.88 a year before tax.

  3. The parent(s) available funds

    1. A single parent must have at least NZD $160,000 in available funds.

    2. A couple must have at least NZD $250,000 in available funds.

    3. These funds must be sufficient to support the parents for the entire duration of their visa. They cannot borrow this money or have it gifted to them; it must genuinely belong to them.

You also meet all of these general requirements:

  • be offshore when applying AND when the visa is granted

  • be sponsored by an adult child who is a New Zealand citizen or resident

  • prove that you will retain links with your home country

  • provide evidence of 12 months’ worth of acceptable health insurance each year

  • not have any dependent children

  • arrive in New Zealand within 6 months of the visa being approved

  • after 3 years, you must leave New Zealand to complete a compliance check (submitting a new medical certificate & providing evidence that acceptable insurance has been maintained while you have been in New Zealand)

Benefits of the Parent Boost Visitor Visa

Here’s why this visa stands out:

✔️ Longer visits: Stay for up to 5 years at a time (divided into two of 3 years & 2 years each).

✔️ Certainty: A 5-year visa means families can plan ahead.

✔️ Stronger family ties: Grandparents can play a bigger role in their grandchildren’s lives.

✔️ Reduced stress: Fewer visa applications over time (compared to General Visitor Visas).

✔️ Emotional well-being: Parents & children can feel more connected & supported.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: Is this a pathway to residency?

No. The Parent Boost Visitor Visa is a visitor visa only. It does not lead directly to residence. The Parent Resident Visa remains available as a pathway to residence for families who can meet the criteria.

Q2: Can both parents apply?

Yes. Both parents of an adult NZ citizen or resident can apply, provided they meet the eligibility requirements.

Q3: How is it different from the Parent Resident Visa?

The Parent Resident Visa is permanent, but has strict income thresholds & an annual quota. The Parent Boost Visitor Visa is temporary, but much easier to access & doesn’t involve such steep financial hurdles.

Q4: Can parents work in New Zealand on this visa?

No. Work rights are not included.

Q5: Why would someone choose this over the PGVV?

The PGVV restricts parents & grandparents to short stays at a time. The Parent Boost Visitor Visa allows the longest visits of any Visitor Visa category. It provides much more flexibility & time with family.

If your parents or grandparents could spend up to a year at a time in New Zealand, what difference would that make in your family’s life? Would it mean more help with childcare? A chance to reconnect with family traditions? Or simply the comfort of having loved ones nearby?

The Parent Boost Visitor Visa is an exciting new option for migrant families in New Zealand. By offering longer stays & more flexibility than existing visas, it has the potential to transform family life for thousands of households.
