New Zealand is enhancing its Skilled Migrant Category to attract & retain skilled migrants for economic growth.
Key Improvements
Introduction of two new residence pathways for skilled migrants: Skilled Work Experience & Trades Technician.
Increased points for university qualifications, especially those completed in New Zealand.
Modest reduction in New Zealand work experience requirements for most pathways.
If you had 4 points & previously needed 2 points from skilled experience, this is reduced from 2 years to 1.5 years.
If you had 3 points & previously needed 3 points from skilled experience, this is reduced from 3 years to 2 years.
New SMC Pathways
Skilled Work Experience Pathway
Must be in an ANZSCO* Skill Level 1 - 3 role. *This will be updated to reflect the NOL in future.
Requires 5 years of relevant experience, of which 2 years are in New Zealand at 1.1 times the median wage.
Trades Technician Pathway
Must be a specified role.
Requires a Level 4 qualification.
Requires 4 years of relevant experience, of which 1.5 years are in New Zealand at the median wage.
Impact on Skilled Migrants
Provides certainty for skilled migrants & helps employers retain talent.
Addresses previous gaps in residence pathways & enhances competitiveness with countries like Australia and Canada.
Some occupations will be restricted to manage immigration risks, with a Red List & Amber List for eligibility.
Impact on the New Zealand Economy
Aligns with the Government's Going for Growth agenda to attract & retain skilled workers.
Contributes to the International Education Plan by recognizing the value of international students completing qualifications in New Zealand.
A review of the Green List will follow to ensure alignment with skill needs.
Application Process & Requirements
New pathways will open for applications in mid-2026, not affecting existing applicants.
Wage experience requirements vary by pathway, with specific thresholds for New Zealand work experience.
High standards of evidence are required for offshore experience to prevent fraud.
Immigration Risk Management
Red & Amber lists will manage risks associated with certain occupations.
Stricter eligibility criteria for roles with higher immigration risks, including wage thresholds & qualifications.
Monitoring & review of settings planned for 2028.
